Interpretation of Lab Tests – Part 2 of 2
Barb Bancroft, RN, MSN, PNP

A Live Virtual Event • 8:50 – 1:45 PM (Central Time)
Recording available for 60 days post-event for CE

The second session on lab tests will discuss inflammation and immunity–in other words, everything you have ever wanted to know about the wonderful world of white blood cells. Neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes will be covered as well as the myriad of diseases that each one is involved in. What does a “shift-to-the-left” mean, what is the ANC, and why should a patient with too many basophils see a hematologist immediately? If a young child has elevated eosinophils should you consider worms or allergies–or both? What do the CRP, hs-CRP, and ESR tell us about inflammation? Which WBCs make antibodies? What types of antibodies do we have and what do each of them tell us? What “auto-antibodies” do we use to diagnose autoimmune diseases? The second part of the second session will discuss the interpretation of serum enzymes and the high sensitivity troponin test. Serum enzymes to be discussed include the AST, ALT, the AST/ALT ratio, alkaline phosphatase, LDH, and CK. Isoenzymes of LDH and CK are also discussed. Why not finish up with understanding all of the components of a urinalysis…albumin in the urine vs. protein in the urine, bacteria in the urine w/ symptoms or without symptoms of a urinary tract infection, urinary casts — RBC, WBC, hyaline…what does all of that mean?
