Interpretation of Lab Tests – Part 1 of 2

This first session on lab tests will cover tests for lipids (HDL, LDL, VLDL/triglycerides, non-HDL, and TC), coagulation tests (platelets, PT, INR, aPTT, TT, fibrinogen), and how to evaluate the patient with “anemia” (Hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCV, MCH, MCHC, reticulocyte count and total RBC, testing for renal function, TSH, interleukin, iron, TIBC, serum ferritin). It’s a full session packed with clinical pearls, pharmacology correlations, and the role of supplements and interpreting various lab tests (anabolic steroids; red yeast rice; the “g’s–garlic, glucosamine, grapeseed extract, gingko, ginger). Barb will discuss thrombocytopenia and thrombocytosis, hyperlipidemia, hyperfibrinogenemia and the role of estrogen, iron-deficiency anemia in children vs adults as well as gender differences, B vitamins and anemia (folic acid and B12), the role of the kidney and erythropoietin, hypothyroidism and anemia, and the role of certain chronic diseases and anemia. It’s an education and entertaining day packed with clinical quips and timely tips about lab test interpretation.
